How Actors Can Network at a Film Festival

Tips & Tricks for Actors “Networking” at a Film Festival or an In-Person Event

Does the word “networking” scare you silly???

A lot of people (whether they’re actors or not) are nervous about engaging with others out in the real world. So let’s first own up to everyone being a bit awkward and accept that, and second, stop thinking about it as NETWORKING and instead start thinking about it as BUILDING AN AUTHENTIC CONNECTION with another human being because truly, that’s what it is!

Get in the right mindset.

  • You’re probably not the only one who is nervous. Approach it instead as being your opportunity to help someone else feel comfortable!

Break the ice!

  • Compliment someone. Did you like their film? If so, share what moment specifically moved you and WHY. Do you like their outfit? Their drink of choice? Let them know! It will make them feel good and is a great opening for a conversation.

Get to know them.

  • Ask questions. Ask people questions about who they are as people. How did they get here? What inspired their work? Where are they from? What are they working on next?
  • Find out what you have in common. People like people who are like them aka they have things in common with, so if you find out you share something in common, definitely let them know (this can be an ice breaker too!). It can be as simple as enjoying the same cocktail, being from the same state or wanting to create the same types of work.

Expand your connection.

  • Add value. Once you get to know them a bit, figure out a way you can add value to their lives. Can you introduce them to someone else at the festival that would be beneficial for them to know? Can you simply ask how you can support them on their future projects? Maybe you can give them advice on something random you’ve learned about them like if they are obsessed with plants, a great plant IG account to follow or an article you’ve read that you think might resonate with them. Skies the limit here and sharing articles is a great way to also get their digits so you can text it to them!

Close.

  • Get their contact info. Handing out business cards is so 2007. If someone asks for mine I always say, “Oh, I don’t have one on me” and instead ask for theirs, take a quick pic of it and hand it back to them to save the trees. Or you whip out your phone and ask them if they’re on FB and friend request them in the moment. They’ll typically pull out their phone and accept on the spot. Then a couple weeks later, you can follow them on IG as another reminder of your meeting. You can even god forbid, straight up ask for their email or digits.

I hope this gives you some ideas about how to connect with people IRL at a festival or anywhere! If this resonates with you, please share it with a friend!
